Since its founding, DMT Drehmaschinen GmbH has concentrated on the construction and design of cycle, CNC and conventional lathes, as well as the related services.
1842 - 1992
In 1842, the company is founded under the name “Kern” on Baslerstrasse in Lörrach, Germany. In 1930, it starts to construct lathes. Due to the high quality of the products, the Kern brand very quickly attains a significant position and excellent reputation, both with customers and in the industry as a whole. Commercial problems, an economic slump and the loss of the sole distributing partner forces the formerly years-long leading manufacturer of lathes into insolvency in 1992.
Founding of DMT Drehmaschinen GmbH & Co. KG on Gewerbestraße 18 by five former employees of Kern. In the same year, the first lathes of the type CD 480 are sold. Due to continuous further development, these lathes remain one of the most-sold lathes from the DMT range. Through innovative developments, the product range – and the company premises – expand with great success.
With the objective of an even higher vertical range of production on the one hand and independence from external suppliers on the other, the founding of subsidiary ST, s.r.o. in Sladkovicovo, Slovakia, where state-of-the-art manufacturing machines process cast parts that are delivered to DMT ready for operation, follows in 2002.

Within the course of the succession plan, the partners of DMT Drehmaschinen GmbH & Co. KG sell their company to the AD-PART Group, a company located in Saarland specialised in obtaining long-term holdings in companies in technological grown niches. In its 35-year history, AD-PART has never sold any of its holdings, which number 15 in the meantime. At the Lörrach headquarters, the lathe specialist now has highly qualified employees who – together with the high quality standard, flexible and timely reaction to customer desires and best rendering of services – form the foundation of the growing success of the company.
New development of KD 400: With the introduction of the new EU safety standards, the grandfathering of old, conventional lathes no longer applies. At the same time, a high demand for “more modern” conventional machines has arisen on the market. In contrast with predecessor generations, the thread, ball or taper can be manufactured with two simultaneously operating axes. This demand and the increased requirements at training facilities for machines on which operators can be trained not only in conventional operation, but also for CNC or cycle control, have led to DMT Drehmaschinen GmbH & Co. KG initiating the development of this new machine type.
